About Root Canal Treatment

Procedure to treat infection at the center of a tooth, saving it from extraction.

Key Benefits

  • Saves your natural tooth from extraction
  • Relieves pain caused by infection
  • Prevents the spread of infection to surrounding teeth
  • Restores normal biting force and sensation
  • Maintains natural appearance
  • Protects other teeth from excessive wear or strain

Treatment Process

Diagnosis and Preparation

Your dentist will examine your tooth, take X-rays to assess the extent of infection, and administer local anesthesia to ensure you're comfortable during the procedure.

Accessing the Pulp

A small opening is made in the crown of the tooth to access the infected pulp chamber and root canals.

Cleaning and Shaping

The infected pulp is removed, and the canals are cleaned, disinfected, and shaped to prepare them for filling.

Filling the Canals

The cleaned canals are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha to seal them and prevent further infection.

Restoration

A temporary or permanent filling is placed to close the access hole. In most cases, a crown is recommended to protect the tooth and restore its full function.

Aftercare

After root canal treatment, avoid chewing on the treated tooth until your permanent restoration is placed. Continue to practice good oral hygiene by brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and visiting your dentist regularly. Some mild discomfort may be experienced for a few days after the procedure, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.
